Moans and heavy breathing had been replaced by soft laughter and whispered voices hours later. Gage lay under Veda with her head cradled on his chest and one of her thighs slung across his pelvis. His jacket served as a blanket, draped over their naked hips.

“Stop laughing at me.” He pulled her in closer, eyes growing sleepy as she dragged her nails through his hair. The nails on her other hand trailed over the dusting of hair on his chest, around his pink nipples, and over the freckles on his shoulders. He became entranced by the flags still painted on her nails. “I feel like you never take me seriously. I’m a serious person.”

Veda chortled. “I just don’t get it. What do you mean they favored him?”

“I mean they favored him. Am I speaking Japanese?”

Veda sat up and stacked her hands on his chest, pressing her chin on top of it. “But you’re their son.”

He shrugged, tracing the designs in her eyes. “That doesn’t mean they have to look at me and see a worthy businessman. That doesn’t mean they won’t look at him and wonder why I couldn’t be more like him.”

“Um… That’s exactly what it means, actually. A parent is supposed to be blinded by love and utterly delusional when it comes to their kids. They’re supposed to think the sun shines out of your ass, even when you’re fucking up royally. The worst part is that you’re not even fucking up. Your parents created a polite, handsome, well-dressed, well-adjusted, and did I mention hot-as-all-hell hospital CEO, and they’re favoring that asshole, Todd Lockwood?” Her voice rose. “Over you? Are they blind, or just stupid?”

He chuckled, his knuckles brushing her cheek.

“It blows my mind that they could favor anyone over their only son. Even worse is that they’ve made it so obvious that you’re actually aware of it.” Veda had riled herself up, her voice hitching. “And you’re a fantastic businessman. The chief of staff gets fired, out of the blue, for popping pills? This whole place could’ve fallen apart so easily. But you came in, and your leadership and your aura just calmed everything down before it had a chance to explode. Not everyone can do that. Some CEOs would’ve spiraled into a panic and took every last one of his employees down with him. But you… You have a really… tranquil way about you. You’re special, Gage.”

His chest rose as he took a heaving breath. “Not special enough for my father to make me vice president of his cruise line.”

“Wouldn’t vice president be a huge step down anyway?” She shook her head. “You don’t like being CEO here?”

He smiled at her, running his knuckle down the bridge of her nose, her cheeks, still rosy from their lovemaking, her eyebrows, and the tiny curls at her hairline. “I like it better now.”

“But you’d rather be at Blackwater Cruises, with a lesser title?”

“A lesser title, sure, but triple the money. The cruise line is our family’s real bread and butter.
